There are a number of ways to control lighting in your home. Methods will depend on budget and whether you want lighting automation in an existing structure or you are planing for your new home. When considering a lighting system for new construction, some form of low voltage or digital switching (hardwired) should be considered due to its reliability. The other option is to use the existing wiring in a home and use switches that send a digital signal over the power lines. This is called a "power line switching". Other products use radio waves to communicate between wall switches to create scenes, and some products will use both ir/radio waves and power line switching technologies.
Hardwired systems, while usually being the most expensive, are always the most reliable. If you are in the process of designing a new home, you should consider a hard wired system. Daley Electric can help design the right system that suits your needs. Colorado Vnet is a very powerful, yet flexible system. This system is based on modules, so the lighting system can be as simple or comprehensive as needed. Power line switching uses the same wires that feed you lights to carry information from switch to switch in order to create scenes. X-10 is the generic term for these type of products. This type of system can be retro-fitted into existing homes and then tied in with security and fire alarms to help alert the whole house by turning on all the lights when an alarm is sounded. These devices and also control appliances and HVAC equipment.
Wireless devices transmit switching information by radio waves or infrared waves. Lutron's Radio RA is on the most extensive and competent products on the wireless control market today. It is also one of the most expensive, but with that expense comes the backing of a great company and the ability to tie the RA system in with many other Lutron products.
